Some orthopedic surgeons have been hesitant to transition away from the use of tourniquets during total knee arthroplasties (TKA) due to the benefits of its use, including increased visualization of the surgical field, reduced intraoperative blood loss, and patients’ postoperative pain. However, recent studies have found that tourniquetless TKA may result in similar rates of postoperative opioid use, improved knee function, and a reduced potential of harms when compared with tourniquet use in TKA.
