New Device Detects Severe Stroke in Seconds

The volumetric impedance phase shift spectroscopy (VIPS) device can effectively detect the occurrence of a severe stroke in seconds, according to the authors of the VITAL study.1

Worn like a visor, the portable, non-invasive device is able to differentiate large vessel occlusion strokes and large hemorrhagic strokes from minor strokes, which could allow for earlier intervention for the prevention of further brain damage.2

The VIPS device’s effectiveness was examined in 3 cohorts consisting of 248 individuals. Of these participants, 41 presented as acute stroke codes at a major comprehensive stroke center (CSC), 128 presented to CSCs with a wide variety of brain pathology, and 79 were healthy volunteers.

The researchers specifically evaluated 2 diagnostic parameters: the abilities of the VIPS device to differentiate severe stroke from minor stroke and to discern severe stroke from all other subjects.

Results indicated that the area under the curve (AUC) for differentiating severe stroke from minor strokes was 0.93, with a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 92%.

Furthermore, the device was shown to differentiate severe strokes from all other subjects with a sensitivity of 93%, a specificity of 87%, and an AUC of 0.95.

“This device has the potential to improve the triage of patients suffering severe stroke,” the study authors concluded.
