CKD Is Common Among Patients With Multiple Chronic Conditions

A recent study showed that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is prevalent among patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCCs), including arterial hypertension (AH) and diabetes. These conditions together increase patients’ cardiovascular (CV) risk.

The findings were presented on July 16, 2017, at the 22nd World Congress on Heart Disease in Canada.

Patients with CKD have a 10- to 30-fold increased risk of CV disease than individuals without CKD, with conditions like AH and diabetes being major causes of CKD.

In their study, the researchers evaluated the medical records of 1646 patients with AH, diabetes, and high CV risk from November 2016 to January 2017. The researchers defined glomerular filtration rate (GFR) as lower than 60 ml/min, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as higher than 100 mg/dL, and high blood glucose as higher than 100 mg/dL.

Results indicated that among 1646 patients, 22.1% had CKD. Among these, mean GFR was 41.9 ml/min and was characterized by higher pulse pressure, higher triglyceride levels, previous cancer diagnosis, systolic heart failure, high LDL cholesterol, simvastatin use, and lower fasting blood glucose values. Additionally, these patients showed a greater tendency for asymptomatic peripheral vascular disease.

“CKD was found to be prevalent among the MCC population and [was] significantly associated with other comorbidities that should be systematically screened in a population of similar profile,” the researchers concluded. “In spite of the greater use of statins, the users still showed with lipid profile outside the recommended goal.”
