Adult Immunization Vaccine Schedule Approved for 2017

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently approved the adult immunization schedule proposed by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The schedule includes recommendations for vaccinating adults 19 years and older.

The updated schedule includes changes for influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, and meningococcal vaccinations.

Among the changes to the recommendations:

  • The LAIV4 vaccine for the 2016-2017 influenza season was not recommended due to the low effectiveness against A(H1N1)pdm09 during the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 flu seasons.
  • Adult females through age 26 and adult males through age 21 who initiated the HPV vaccination series before age 15 and received 1 dose, or 2 doses less than 5 months apart, are not considered adequately vaccinated and require an additional dose of the HPV vaccine.
  • HPV vaccination is recommended for men between 22 and 26 years of age.
  • HIV-infected adults who have not been previously vaccinated should receive a 2-dose primary MenACWY series for protection against meningococcal disease. Doses should be administered at least 2 months apart, and patients should be revaccinated every 5 years.

The adult immunization schedule was approved by the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and went into effect this month.
