ACC/AHA Update MI Management Performance and Quality Measures

The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association have updated their performance and quality measures for the care of patients with myocardial infarction.

The update was developed following a comprehensive examination of the most current and relevant guidelines, including the ACC/AHA guidelines on ST-elevation MI (STEMI) and non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI) issued in 2013 and 2014.

Overall, the update includes 11 measures that were not present in the 2008 set, 1 measure was retired, and 4 had changes made to them.

Among the new measures:

  • Immediate angiography for resuscitated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in patients whose electrocardiogram showed STEMI.
  • Noninvasive stress testing in patients with STEMI or NSTEMI
  • Cardiac troponin testing within 6 hours of hospital arrival
  • Early invasive strategy in stabilized high-risk patients with NSTEMI
  • Aldosterone antagonists at discharge in eligible patients with STEMI and NSTEMI.

“Our writing committee [recognizes] that all performance measures and quality measures are dynamic and can be revised or retired based on the emergence of scientific evidence and new guideline recommendations,” the task force concluded.
