USPSTF Releases Recommendations on Youth Smoking Prevention

The USPSTF has released a draft recommendation statement on the prevention and cessation of tobacco and nicotine use in youth.

The recommendation, when finalized, will replace the 2013 recommendation on primary care interventions for the prevention of tobacco use in children and adolescents.

For the update, the USPSTF commissioned a systemic review of available evidence, now including data on the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems, which has increased significantly in youth since tracking of its usage began in 2011.

Among the recommendations:

  • Primary care clinicians should provide interventions, including education or brief counseling, to prevent initiation of tobacco use (including both conventional cigarette use or “vaping”) among children and adolescents. (Grade B)
  • Current evidence is insufficient to assess the benefits and harms of primary care-feasible interventions for cessation of tobacco use among children and adolescents (Grade I).

“The USPSTF is calling for more research to identify interventions (behavioral counseling or pharmacotherapy) to help children and adolescents who use tobacco to quit.”
