ACP Releases New Edition of Their Ethics Manual

The American College of Physicians has released the 7th edition of its ethics manual, which is the first update to the guidance since 2012.

“The Manual is intended to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, teaching, and medical research and to describe and explain underlying principles of ethics, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues,” they wrote.

First published in 1984, the Manual is intended to be reviewed and updated every 5 to 7 years. Each section of the 6th edition was reviewed, over the course of 8 meetings, by The American College of Physicians Ethics, Professionalism and Human Rights Committee.

In the 7th edition, many sections have been expanded upon and several new sections were added, including precision medicine and genetic testing, research and protection of human subjects, telemedicine, electronic communications, social media and online professionalism, electronic health records, and physician volunteerism.

“The Manual is written for physicians by a physician organization as we attempt to navigate through sometimes difficult terrain. Our ultimate intent is to enhance the quality of care provided to patients. We hope the Manual will help thoughtful readers to be virtuous physicians, trusted by patients and the public.”

The full guidance is published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
