AAP/AAFP Release Updated Guidance on Sports Physicals
Several medical organizations have jointly released updated guidance for conducting the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (sports physical).
The Preparticipation Physical Evaluation 5th Edition was the result of a combined effort of experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Notable updates to the guidance include information on the evaluation of students’ mental health, including topics such as bullying, drug abuse, birth control use, anxiety, and depression, as well as a new chapter focused on the evaluation of transgender athletes.
The guidance recommends conducting the sports physical as part of students’ routine health screening visit.
